First-Ever Toyota Corolla Cross vs. Best-Selling Toyota Corolla
The best-selling car of all time, the Toyota Corolla, has spawned a new, roomier counterpart. The all-new, first-ever Toyota Corolla Cross expands – literally – on driver’s favorite aspects of the Toyota Corolla with a new SUV body style. People familiar with the original Toyota Corolla will find many similarities in the spacious cabin but enjoy a higher ride height, more cargo space and available AWD. Toyota designed the 2022 Corolla Cross to appeal to America’s growing demand for crossover SUVs while capitalizing on the proven features of the best-selling Corolla.
All-New Body Style
In 2021, the Toyota Corolla hit 50 million sales globally, and with that milestone came the announcement of the first-ever 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross. As its name suggests, the Corolla Cross is a new crossover SUV based on the design and functionality of the Toyota Corolla sedan. However, the new Corolla Cross features an all-new body style and unique design elements with a modern twist. The Corolla Cross is slightly larger than the Toyota C-HR but smaller than the Toyota RAV4. Its versatile style and shape appeal to urban and suburban drivers alike.
SUV Functionality
Drivers who prefer an SUV for its higher ride height, increased visibility, and ample cargo space will be right at home in the new 2022 Corolla Cross. Plus, the new Corolla Cross boasts 1,500 lbs of towing capacity and offers AWD, neither found in the Toyota Corolla sedan nor Corolla hatchback. Ground clearance of 8.1 inches will take the new Corolla Cross farther off the beaten path so you can go from regular weekday driving to off-road weekend adventures with greater ease.
While the cabin in the Toyota Corolla Cross borrows heavily from the Corolla (why change what works?), the new Corolla Cross adds more space for passengers, especially in rear legroom. Plus, cargo capacity increases to 26.5 cu-ft. in the Corolla Cross, up from 23 cu-ft. in the Corolla Hatchback or 13.1 cu-ft. in the Corolla Sedan.
Toyota Efficiency
Available in three trims – L, LE and XLE – the new Corolla Cross runs on a 2.0-L four-cylinder engine with CVT and 169 horsepower and gets up to 32 mpg.*
The 2022 Corolla comes in five trims – L, LE, SE, XLE, XSE, three special editions – SE Nightshade, SE Apex, XSE Apex, a single hybrid trim (LE), and offers two gas powertrains or the hybrid option. The standard 2022 Corolla 1.8-L four-cylinder engine produces 139-hp with 34 mpg.* Or upgrade to the 2.0-L with 169-hp and 151 lb-ft of torque that offers a CVT or 6-speed manual and gets about 34 mpg.* Both engines are available on the new Corolla Sedan, while the more powerful engine option is standard on the Corolla Hatchback.
The 2022 Corolla Hybrid, only available as a Corolla Sedan, produces 121-hp but boasts 52 mpg.* Expect a new Corolla Cross Hybrid to arrive in 2023.
