Feel the Power: Three New Electrified Toyotas Coming in 2022
Toyota plans to debut three brand new electrified vehicles later this year. The 2022 models will include two BEVs – Battery Electric Vehicles, or fully electric – and one PHEV – Plug-In Hybrid. As a leader in the move toward electrified driving, the announcement of three new Toyota EVs further cements Toyota’s position in the market with “over 40% share of the total alternative fuel market… and a 64% share of hybrids and plug-ins”†. By 2025, Toyota plans to have 40% of new sales come from EVs and up to 70% by 2030.
Toyota research shows that BEVs and PHEVs provide similar environmental benefits based on the cost to purchase and maintain, and the manufacturing process. While BEVs produce no emissions during operation, PHEVs emit fewer greenhouse gases during production and are more affordable for most people. Toyota aims to provide an option for every type of driver no matter their budget, location or driving preferences to encourage more people to opt for cleaner cars.
The Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050 measures progress in four key areas: reducing carbon emissions, water conservation, creating a sustainable supply chain that reduces waste, and protecting biodiversity. As part of the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, Toyota is developing the e-TNGA platform to produce its Battery Electric Vehicles. It is flexible enough to build rear-, front- and all-wheel-drive hybrid electric models.
To achieve targets driven by the North American Environmental Action Plan, Toyota is currently aiming to:
- Reduce CO2 during vehicle production and maintenance, as well as company operations and all Toyota products
- Reduce water use by 3% per unit of vehicle production, using 2020 as a baseline
- Reduce use of plastic packaging by 25%, using 2018 as a baseline
- Develop third party habitat management policies for on site operations
Since the introduction of the Toyota Prius over 25 years ago, Toyota has led the industry in hybrid electric vehicle technology, electrifying vehicles of every size and capability. Toyota recently expanded into SUVs – Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, RAV4 Prime (PHEV), Highlander Hybrid – and added a hybrid option to its iconic sedans like the Toyota Corolla Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid. The Toyota Mirai harnesses the power of hydrogen and emits only water vapor; it’s easy to fill up at a hydrogen refueling station, with no charging downtime, but produces zero emissions. Even minivan haulers have a hybrid option in the new Toyota Sienna Hybrid. The Toyota Avalon and the new hybrid-only Toyota Venza are hybrids that offer a bit more luxury on top of fuel efficiency. Of course, the Toyota Prius is still one of the best vehicles on the market for fuel efficiency. The 2021 Toyota Prius gets 52 mpg* while the new Prius Prime plug-in hybrid offers a 25-mile all-electric driving range** and 54 mpg*, perfect for zero-emission trips around the city.
Details on the new Toyota BEVs and PHEV are limited, but one will be a crossover, and one may be under the luxurious Lexus brand.
